Sketchbook – Hand Studies Pt.1

Referring back to my very initial thoughts on gesture and hands suggesting emotion and telling a narrative/language, I decided to concentrate some attention on making studies of these human features. They suggest a character without giving away any facial representation and therefore have a powerful connection in terms of them being a body feature that ‘touches’ but also something everyone can see in their own body and relate to. As a collaboration project for sharing with a wider group of people, we wanted that intimate connection to be felt through the writing and ambiguous illustration elements – the depiction of hands therefore felt appropriate to explore further…

In making drawings of gesture and hands from my found photographs, I began to separate and extract more subtle interpretations of body parts away from their original owners. These studies felt suited to the delicacy and sentimental writing by my collaborator.
